Hammerstall, German type

Hammerstall, German type

$38.00Price

The red color and diamond texture of this Pfannendeckel (Hammerstall) simulates the Russia leather that was required by the 1767 Hessian Infantry Regulations and is a must have for any German reenactor in the flintlock era!

"Auf die Gewehre sollen allezeit Pfanndeckel von rothem juchten Leder sein"

A pan cover of red Russia leather shall be on the muskets at all times

The design details come from Friedrich Wilhelm Carl von Schmettau's 1773 work "Einrichtung des Krieges-Wesens für die Preußische Infanterie zu Friedens-Zeiten". It features a slit in the back that goes around the foot of the hammer, which locks it in place to prevent it from inadvertently slipping off. This locking feature can also be seen in the 1783 painting of the Hessian Guard Battalion being reviewed by Friedrich II.

The Pfannendeckel description from Schmettau and translation:

ÄPlan 9, Fig. 4, A Batterien-Deckel, der den Theil, der nach dem Hahnen zu siehet, überdeckt; b Ofnung [!], die weiter herunter die Batterien deckt; c Knopf und Knopfloch, um den Pfannendeckel an den Bügel zu knüpfen."

Plate 9, Fig. 4: A Battery-Cover, the part which covers the part facing the cock; b opening, which covers the battery further down; c button and buttonhole, for buttoning the hammerstall to the trigger guard.

These hammerstalls are sized to fit Germanic musket locks. Custom sizes for other locks, such as small Jäger and fowler locks, are available upon request.
